A youth-sized neighborhood transformed street safety education into active play, helping San Francisco's youngest residents build confidence navigating their city.

ED’S NEIGHBORHOOD: A STREET SMARTS PROJECT

Commissioned by San Francisco Public Works as part of the City's Vision Zero initiative, Ed's Neighborhood reimagined traffic safety education for elementary school students through immersive, hands-on learning. The play-scale model recreated a familiar San Francisco block where children could safely practice crossing intersections, riding bicycles, navigating transit stops, and responding to real-world traffic conditions. By replacing classroom instruction with physical experience, the project made essential safety lessons memorable, engaging, and accessible. 

LMNOP facilitated and developed the design through a charette with City of San Francisco Officials, balancing educational goals with durability, mobility, and ease of assembly to allow the model to travel throughout San Francisco. Named after late mayor Ed Lee, Ed's Neighborhood demonstrates how thoughtfully designed environments can shape behavior, build confidence, and community well-being starts with our youth.
